Find an undersubscribed, outstanding school in your area

Eight local authorities in England did not have a single outstanding, undersubscribed school, our analysis found. These were City of London, Dudley, Isle of Wight, Luton, Merton, Peterborough, Reading and Southend-on-Sea.

The most oversubscribed school in the country is Beaumont Primary School, in Croydon, south London. There was a ratio of 4.67 first-preference applications per place in this outstanding school in 2019.

The most undersubscribed schools in the country in 2019 were Oldfield Primary School, Wintringham Primary Academy, Membury Primary Academy, Goodnestone Church of England Primary School, Yealand Church of England Primary School, Shelton with Hardwick Community School.

These six schools collectively handed out 15 places the previous year, despite not receiving a single first-preference application.

The most undersubscribed “outstanding” school was Earl’s Court Free School Primary, in Hammersmith and Fulham, which saw 14 first-preference applications while offering 30 places.

What does it mean when a school is oversubscribed?

An oversubscribed school is one where it has more applicants selecting it as their first choice than it has places. This means that some parents who chose that school as their first choice option will get turned down.
