At that point, fewer than 60 cases had been found. But now the virus, which has since been named Covid-19, has spread to 185 countries, infecting more than 5.8 million people and killing more than 361,000.

Scientists believe that the virus has mutated into two strains: the older “S-type” appears to be milder and less infectious, while the “L-type” that emerged later spreads quickly and currently accounts for around 70 per cent of cases.
