How Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP are using independence to distract from Scotland’s problems

Nicola Sturgeon and the Scottish National Party (SNP) are expected to kick-start a renewed Scottish independence emphasis when the party conference opens on Friday. 

But as Telegraph columnist Alan Cochrane argues, the move is merely a distraction from a range of issues that are plaguing the nation – from widening social inequality to the worst rate of drug-related deaths in Europe.

Additionally, SNP members are set to debate proposals for a new commission that would seek to show how a border with England could “favourably benefit” an independent Scotland, despite warnings that inevitable trade barriers will prove devastating to businesses. “Brexit times 10”, as Mrs Sturgeon’s economic adviser has already cautioned.
