Marathon runners forced to go the extra mile after organisers mess up the measurements

The race finished at 12pm. At just after 2pm, Brighton Marathon Weekend tweeted: “We would like to apologise to our marathon participants that the course today has measured 568m too long.

“We are wholly disappointed that this has affected our runners and hope that it hasn’t marred the experience, at what has been a fantastic comeback after event after 18 months.”

The tweet was met with hundreds of responses blasting the blunder. It follows a similar error in 2017, when thousands of runners were left crestfallen after it was revealed that Brighton Half Marathan course was 146m shorter than the required distance.

The UK Athletics governing body has been contacted for comment.
