Nicky Campbell reveals bipolar disorder made him take rubbish home to examine who might have dropped it

Nicky Campbell has told how his bipolar disorder caused him to become so ‘obsessed’ with litter louts he took discarded items home to look for ‘clues’ about people that dropped them.

The BBC 5 Live presenter revealed he examined litter on his table and even ‘chased and photographed’ people when he caught them dropping unwanted items.

The 59 year old, who also hosts ITV’s Long Lost Family, opened up about his bipolar when he appeared on the Fortunately with Fi and Jane podcast.

Campbell explained he gets ‘incredible hyper-focus and highs’ and becomes ‘obsessed with things’.

He said: “I was obsessed with people dropping litter.

“I was collecting litter on the common, taking it home, putting it out on the table and looking for credit card clues and stuff like that.

“[I was] chasing people and photographing people on the common with litter.”

Campbell also said: “I was sitting for hours on end looking at animals being exploited and tortured on the internet because I wanted to save every animal in the world.

“Tina [his wife] would say ‘what you doing up there?’ and I would say ‘I’m just working, just working’.”

Scottish Campbell said he had an ‘implosion’ while on air for 5 Live while reading about elephant deaths.

He said: “I couldn’t do anything the morning I had my absolute implosion.

“I was reading this stuff about these elephants that had been kil-led, I think in West Bengal on a railway track.

“Trains hurtled through the forest and regularly crushed these beautiful animals, these wonderfully sentient creatures. Then the others in the herd returned to mourn.. it’s just awful.

“I looked at these mutilated bodies just hanging from railway bridges and I was just crashing into one of those terrible lows.

“I thought ‘I can’t function anymore’.”
